Overload

Inspired by the intuitive collage techniques of surrealist pioneers, Benoît Theunissen has crafted Overload, a series created in an "automatic" mode. This collection explores the rich landscape of the mind, reflecting the hyper-abundance of thoughts through a series of digital collages. Drawing on elements from photographs taken during his explorations in urban, rural, and natural settings, Benoît assembles everyday scenes in incongruous ways to forge improbable mind connections, all while employing digital painting techniques to add depth.

The series captures the tension and complexity of modern life through a surreal, digital landscape. Each piece serves as a visual metaphor for sensory and informational overload, featuring fragmented realities of layered urban scenes, the intricate chaos of urban labyrinths, and the merging of organic and synthetic in nature and technology convergences. Darker tones in some pieces suggest dystopian visions, critiquing technological overreach and environmental degradation.

Further enriching the collection are motifs of human interaction with technology, resilience against urban harshness, and mythical overtones that symbolise timeless human experiences. Dreamscapes offer escapes from chaos, while layered memories and digital footprints question the impacts of digital existence on privacy and legacy.

Overload uses vibrant colours and complex layering to discuss the overwhelming nature of existence where technology, humanity, and nature intersect. This collection invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences in this digitally saturated age, enhancing the emotional impact through surrealism that makes the familiar seem alien.
